Compost Shake From Kitchen Scraps
Now that the waste not attitude has become part of our regular routine, let us examine some of the many uses for our little pot of gold. If this routine has not become part of your daily habit you may still find this information useful. We will begin with potted plants. Blender Method: put food scraps in the blender, add enough water to make a consistency no thicker than whole milk. Turn the blender on high. Loosen the soil around the plant with a fork. Poking holes down into the soil will have the same effect. The object here is for the liquid to run down to the roots. They will benefit most from this concoction. You may want to wash any unsightly particles of food that appear on the foliage with a sprinkle of fresh water. Or take extra care by covering the foliage first. Now give your little plant a nice big swig of this juicy compost shake and watch it grow.
If the food particles concern you could just cover the pitcher with cheese clothe. This will prevent all but the finest food particles from escaping on to your plants foliage.
This is a quick easy method for feeding potted plants that are kept out of doors.
If you wish to feed the compost shake to house plants it is recommended that you take some precautions first. Your house plants are used to living in a protected environment.
Conditions we may not notice could seem particularly extreme to a plant who only knows a constant life of non fluctuating air quality and temperature.
For this reason you will need to consider your local weather conditions and your local forecast before moving them outside.
Once outside follow the same directions given for potted plants. Plan to leave these pots outside for two or three days or until no odor can be detected.
The Compost shake can also be used on plants growing in the ground. In the future we will discuss using larger quantities for larger areas and bigger plantings. For now your plants are going to love you. Your olfactory sense will thank you. Family or visitors will never be the wiser. Except to notice how your plants are thriving.
They will want to know your secret.
Now compost on.
