Boric Acid – Is It The Best Cockroach Killer?
Cockroaches in your home often disturb people so badly that they will do anything to kill the cockroaches immediately. But, some of the solutions we reach for first are not the best in the long run.
Using Boric Acid For Killing Cockroaches
Boric Acid is a very good choice for eradicating a cockroach infestation in your home. Cockroaches breed fast and can quickly become immune to the typical poisons sold in stores. The longer you use them, the less effective they become. Boric Acid does not suffer from this problem.
This works as a stomach poison and also by abrading the outer waxy coating on the cockroach and causing it to dehydrate.
Boric Acid Powder
One common form of boric acid used for killing cockroaches is a powder. Lightly dusting areas of high cockroach traffic (like behind stoves and under refrigerators) will cause the cockroaches to pick it up on their legs and bodies. They track it back into their nests where it kills others as well.
If you want to encourage the cockroaches to eat the boric acid, there are many recipes online for mixing cocoa powder and sugar into the boric acid.
Boric Acid Paste
Boric acid is a key component in many cockroach gels and pastes. It serves as the poison and the other ingredients function as baits to get the cockroaches to eat the poison.
These gels can be placed along common cockroach travel areas.
Boric Acid’s Big Limitation
Sadly, as good as boric acid is for killing cockroaches, it is not the best cockroach killer. Boric acid works slowly. It can take 2-3 weeks to see significant results. And, if you have a bad cockroach infestation, you won’t want to wait that long for results.
The Best Cockroach Killing Solution
The best solution to eradicating a cockroach infestation is an integrated pest management solution. Boric acid is one important part of the solution, but you will want to do much more.
You do not have to rely on highly toxic poisons to get the job done. Boric acid is relatively benign to humans and doesn’t lose its effectiveness over time. So, it is an excellent tool to use in any integrated pest management solution.
